Informational Guide to Tromsø Airport, Langnes (TOS) - Non Official

Tromso Airport Terminals

All the information featured on this page was compiled and written by David Enrich, a renowned expert in aviation and airport guides, since 1999.

Tromsø Airport (TOS), officially known as Tromsø Airport, Langnes, is the main international gateway to northern Norway and the Arctic region. Located just 5 km from Tromsø city centre, the airport plays a key role in connecting remote Arctic communities with major Norwegian and European cities. Despite handling nearly 3 million passengers annually, the airport remains relatively compact, offering a smooth and efficient passenger experience.

One of its defining features is its simplicity: the terminal is easy to navigate, walking distances are short, and procedures are generally efficient. This makes it particularly convenient for both leisure travelers (especially those visiting for Northern Lights tourism) and business passengers.

Due to its small size, you typically need less time at TOS than at major European hubs—arriving 90 minutes before departure is often sufficient for most flights.

Historical Background and Origins

Tromsø Airport opened on 14 September 1964, replacing the former water aerodrome at Skattøra, which had served the region since the post-war years.

The development of a land-based airport marked a major milestone for northern Norway, improving accessibility and enabling year-round operations regardless of sea conditions. Over time:

  • 1977: Terminal B (international section) was constructed
  • 1997: Terminal A opened, expanding domestic capacity and modernizing facilities
  • Continuous upgrades have followed, including runway extensions and operational improvements

Today, Tromsø Airport is one of Norway’s busiest regional airports and an important hub for Widerøe’s regional network across Arctic Norway.

Terminal Overview

Tromsø Airport has one main passenger terminal divided into two sections:

  • Terminal A: Primarily domestic flights
Terminal B: International (mainly European) flights

Although sometimes described as separate terminals, both sections are integrated within a single building, making transfers straightforward.

Layout and Levels

Ground floor:

  • Check-in counters and self-service kiosks
  • Baggage drop and reclaim
  • Arrivals hall

Upper level:

  • Security control
  • Departure gates
  • Shops and restaurants

The airport is compact, and walking times rarely exceed 5–7 minutes between key areas.

If you are connecting between domestic and international flights, you usually won’t need to re-clear security unless required by airline or Schengen rules.

Terminal Zones and Passenger Flow

Check-in Area

Passengers can check in at staffed counters or use self-service machines. Bag drop is efficient due to relatively low congestion compared to larger airports.

Security Control

Security is located on the upper level. Queues are generally short, though delays can occur during peak winter tourist season.

Boarding Gates

  • Gates are located close together
  • Limited use of jet bridges; some flights require bus boarding
  • Clear signage ensures easy navigation

Boarding often starts later than in large hubs, but punctuality is strict—do not arrive late at the gate.

Shops and Retail

Shopping options are limited but practical, reflecting the airport’s size:

  • Duty-free shop (international departures)
  • Travel essentials and accessories store
  • Kiosk and mini-market (Point, Narvesen)

Products typically include:

  • Perfumes and cosmetics
  • Snacks and beverages
  • Souvenirs and travel accessories

Prices in Norway are generally high—duty-free is often the best place to buy alcohol, cosmetics, or gifts before departure.

Restaurants and Food Options

The airport offers a small but functional selection of dining options, mostly located after security:

  • Café Ritazza (coffee and light meals)
  • Upper Crust (sandwiches and bakery items)
  • O’Leary’s (casual dining, burgers, bar food)

There are no 24-hour restaurants, so options may be limited during early morning or late-night flights.

If you have a very early flight, consider buying food in advance or in the city before arriving at the airport.

VIP Lounges

Tromsø Airport has very limited lounge infrastructure, and there is no major airline-operated lounge in the traditional sense.

However, premium services may include:

  • Third-party lounge access (pre-booked services)
  • VIP assistance and fast-track services
  • Quiet seating areas with Wi-Fi and refreshments

Tip: If lounge access is important, check in advance with your airline or consider third-party lounge booking services.

Facilities and Amenities

The airport offers essential but limited facilities:

  • Free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal
  • ATM (Nordea) available in public area
  • Information desks
  • Car rental services
  • First aid and basic medical services

Important note:

  • Luggage storage at the airport is currently unavailable

Norway is largely cashless—credit/debit cards are accepted almost everywhere.

Services for Families and Reduced Mobility (PRM)

Tromsø Airport is well-equipped for accessibility:

  • Assistance services for passengers with reduced mobility
  • Step-free access and elevators
  • Accessible restrooms
  • Baby changing facilities

Families benefit from:

  • Baby care areas
  • Compact layout (less walking with children)

Request PRM assistance at least 48 hours before your flight for smoother handling.

Security and Baggage Control

Security procedures follow standard European aviation regulations:

  • Liquids restricted to 100 ml containers
  • Electronics may need to be removed during screening
  • Efficient processing due to smaller passenger volume

Baggage handling is generally quick, with short waiting times at reclaim belts.

Winter clothing (boots, layers) may slow down screening—allow a few extra minutes.

Lost and Found

Lost property services are available through the airport:

  • Lost items can be reported at information desks
  • Airlines handle lost checked baggage separately
  • Dedicated lost & found service available on-site

Always check both the airport and your airline if baggage is missing.

Check-in and Boarding Information

  • Check-in typically opens 2 hours before departure
  • Online check-in is widely available
  • Boarding usually begins 30–40 minutes before departure

Due to the airport’s size:

  • Short walking distances
  • Fast boarding processes

Even though the airport is small, flights (especially domestic) board quickly—arrive at the gate on time.
